Extensive Frost Weathering Across Unglaciated North America During the Last Glacial Maximum

چکیده

In unglaciated terrain, the imprint of past glacial periods is difficult to discern. The topographic signature periglacial processes, such as solifluction lobes, may be erased or hidden by time and vegetation, thus their import diminished. Belowground, weathering, particularly frost cracking, have imparted a profound influence on weathering erosion rates during climate regimes. By combining mechanical frost-weathering model with full suite Last Glacial Maximum simulations, we elucidate meters-deep magnitude continent-spanning expanse across North America at ∼21 ka. surprising extent modeled suggests, proxy, broad legacy diverse processes. Complementing previous studies that championed role precipitation-driven changes in Critical Zone evolution, our results imply an additional strong temperature control surficial process efficacy much modern America, both climes.

North Atlantic Deep Water Production during the Last Glacial Maximum

Changes in deep ocean ventilation are commonly invoked as the primary cause of lower glacial atmospheric CO2. The water mass structure of the glacial deep Atlantic Ocean and the mechanism by which it may have sequestered carbon remain elusive. Here we present neodymium isotope measurements from cores throughout the Atlantic that reveal glacial-interglacial changes in water mass distributions. T...

Enhanced chemical weathering of rocks during the last glacial maximum: a sink for atmospheric CO2?

It has been proposed that increased rates of chemical weathering and the related drawdown of atmospheric CO on the 2 Ž . continents may have at least partly contributed to the low CO concentrations during the last glacial maximum LGM . 2 Variations in continental erosion could thus be one of the driving forces for the glacialrinterglacial climate cycles during Quaternary times. To test such an ...

The Last Glacial Maximum.

We used 5704 14C, 10Be, and 3He ages that span the interval from 10,000 to 50,000 years ago (10 to 50 ka) to constrain the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in terms of global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier extent. Growth of the ice sheets to their maximum positions occurred between 33.0 and 26.5 ka in response to climate forcing from decreases in northern summer insolation, tropical Pac...

Comparative phylogeography of unglaciated eastern North America.

Regional phylogeographical studies involving co-distributed animal and plant species have been conducted for several areas, most notably for Europe and the Pacific Northwest of North America. Until recently, phylogeographical studies in unglaciated eastern North America have been largely limited to animals. As more studies emerge for diverse lineages (including plants), it seems timely to asses...
